EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE
NASCAR fans get out and vote…or more aptly, go online and vote! The Los Angeles Sports Council is asking Southern California sports fans to help select “The Greatest Moments in Sports” for 2007 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Fans can visit www.lasports.org and cast their votes in 18 different award categories including motorsports. California Speedway played a prominent role in two of the three entries in that category: Johnson Returns To The Winner's Circle Southern California native Jimmie Johnson won the 2007 Sharp AQUOS 500 for his second career victory on his home track, the California Speedway. Johnson would go on to win six of the final 12 Cup races, securing his second consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship and becoming just the 10th driver to repeat as Cup champion (September 2). Kenseth Sweeps NASCAR's West Coast Premiere Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag in both the Stater Bros. 300 and the Auto Club 500 during the West Coast Premiere of NASCAR at California Speedway. Kenseth, who also won the 2005 Auto Club 500, joined Jeff Gordon, who he edged for the win, as the only drivers with multiple victories at California Speedway (February 24-25). Voting began on December 17 and will conclude on January 10. After registering to vote, you can click directly on the motorsports category to cast your vote for “Greatest Moment” or you can vote for each and any of the 18 categories. Fans will only be allowed to vote on the “Greatest Moment” in each category one time. The winning motorsports moment, along with moments from the other award categories will be revealed at the Sports Council’s third annual LA Sports Awards dinner and show on Sunday, January 20, 2008. The gala will be televised live from the Beverly Hills Hotel on FSN Prime Ticket. The “Greatest Moments” event is a fundraiser for the non-profit Sports Council, which will utilize the proceeds to further its mission of promoting economic development through sports in Southern California.
