A primary goal of assembling the team was to create an iconic group of year-round ambassadors who will become synonymous with California Speedway both at and away from the track. At the track, the California Speedway Girls will be on hand to interact with fans and to enhance the overall fan experience. The team will also have several other pre-race functions including the shading of drivers - a practice that will be new to NASCAR, but is an age-old motorsports tradition - as well as escorting drivers during introductions and on their parade laps. The team will also be at events across the region to spread the California Speedway message in the community.

Additionally, the California Speedway Girls will appear in a 16-month (September 2007-December 2008) limited edition calendar. In putting together the team, California Speedway solicited applications and received over 4,000 submissions. That group was narrowed to a field selected to take part in an extensive interview process. Potential California Speedway Girls participated in four rounds of interviews before being selected as one of the final 43 girls chosen to represent the Speedway.

Several of members of the California Speedway Girls team have professional experience in modeling, acting, or in fitness while others are currently students. While the group is diverse in qualifications, the one common characteristic that they all possess is their representation and embodiment of the active and entertaining lifestyle that is unique to Southern California. Among the 43 girls selected to the team, several grew up in the region as fans of motorsports and NASCAR. The group is also diverse in ethnicities, reflecting the Southern California population.
